"Community Safety and Criminal Justice Reform" free talk live streamed at noon on February 8th butterfly

The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled: "Community Safety and Criminal Justice Reform" at a live streamed "Lunch and Learn" meeting at noon on Wednesday, February 8, 2023.  
 
The topic includes some complex issues: restorative justice, fair bail systems, the role of rehabilitation in incarceration, and public perception about crime rates and recidivism.  The panel of three speakers are:
Public Defender Jeremy Dzubay provides quality legal representation for persons charged with crimes who can’t afford legal counsel.  Dzubay has special interest in and knowledge of the 4th Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable search and seizure. A graduate of the California Western School of Law, he was admitted to the California State Bar in 2005. Prior to his current office, Dzubay  represented defendants in the US Federal courts, and litigated cases in California, Alabama, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.
 
MILPA  Director Cesar Lara works to help formerly incarcerated youth and system-impacted individuals. MILPA (Motivating Individual Leadership for Public Advancement) Collective is a non-profit movement located in Salinas, which advocates for racial justice and an end to mass incarceration. The collective is committed to healing and to creating safe spaces.Prior to MILPA, Lara served variously as: Executive Director, Monterey Central Labor Council; Director, Central Coast Citizenship Project; State Director for the United Farmworkers Nonprofit; Secretary/Treasurer, Teamsters; and Congressional Aid, Representative Sam Farr. Lara is a CSU Chico graduate (International Relations).
 
Monterey Mayor Tyller Williamson was elected in November 2022. His “Moving Monterey Forward” campaign promised government transparency, strengthening community engagement, and broader citizen representation on city boards, commissions, and committees. 
Prior to being elected Mayor, he was a Monterey City Councilmember for 4 years, and served for 12 years as HR Specialist at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). Williamson has a BS Human Communication and a Pre-Law Minor degree from CSUMB, and a Master of Business Administration from NPS.
